SCARSDALE — Fazl Shaikh had his head in his hands as he dropped to his knees in disbelief.
It was starting to feel like Scarsdale would never get a goal past North Rockland goalkeeper Brendan Madden, and when Shaikh hit the post in the 84th minute, the frustration was beginning to show.
But that all changed in an instant when Brandon Bank found Nacho Marini on a counter-attack in the 104th minute and Marini buried the golden goal for a 1-0 double overtime win in a thrilling Class AA first round game on Friday.
“We were just waiting – keep on playing our game and keep on playing our type of style,” Bank said. “We were waiting for that goal. The game is patient and you have to have patience to play.”
No. 4 Scarsdale (10-4-2) controlled just about every facet of the game, outshooting 13th-seeded North Rockland, 29-13, while dominating possession. But Madden was on his game, making 17 saves to keep the Red Raiders (7-7-3) in it for over 100 minutes.
“We played a few games where there were some good keepers, but that was probably the best effort that I saw out of a goalie all season,” Scarsdale midfielder Jonny Dorf said. “He was all over the place making saves, really, everywhere at every point in the game. He was huge for them.”
After Ben Winters made a fingertip save on North Rockland’s best chance of the game in the 90th minute, a breakaway from Jamal Ackpaloo, Scarsdale was victimized eight minutes later by another post on a great look from Takeshi Kakudo.
It seemed like the game was destined for penalty kicks when Bank cleared a ball and found a streaking Marini, whose goal set up a quarterfinals matchup at home on Monday against No. 5 John Jay-East Fishkill.
“They got a free kick and crossed it in,” Bank said. “I think someone tried clearing it out and the (North Rockland) guy was about to take a shot. I got a touch on it and found Nacho. He just beat two guys and put it in.”
Scarsdale played John Jay to a scoreless tie on Oct. 18.
“We played man down (due to a red card) for the last 15 of regulation and the 20 minutes of overtime,” Dorf said. “We were able to come out with a tie against a very solid team, which is very good after playing man down like that. It showed the heart that we had and the guys fought tremendously. I’m looking forward to seeing how we play with them 11 vs. 11.”
MAMARONECK — J.D. Wilson scored on an assist from Tomas Illans in the 34th minute and Nelson Barrios put the game away with a penalty kick in the 79th minute of No. 3 Mamaroneck’s 2-0 win over visiting No. 14 Suffern in a Class AA first round game on Friday.
Thomas Orgielewicz made eight saves for the Tigers (12-2-3), who will host No. 5 John Jay-East Fishkill in the quarterfinals on Monday at 5 p.m.
Mamaroneck had beaten Suffern 5-0 just last week.
“Suffern came out to play today,” Mamaroneck coach Rich Becker said. “It was a much different game than the other day. It’s sectional time. It wasn’t pretty, but the boys did what they had to do to win the game.”
