Another week with several strong candidates for our #lohudsoccer Player of the Week, including Hamilton’s Capy Charles, Port Chester’s Luis Morales, Tappan Zee’s Vincent Pepe, Carmel’s Sebastian Lopez and Valhalla’s Michael Perna — among others — but no one had a week quite like Saunders goalkeeper Melvin Ponce.
Not only did Ponce help his team go 3-0 this week with three shutout wins, but he also led the Blue Devils to their second consecutive Yonkers City Championship. Saunders has yet to allow a goal this season, and Ponce is a big reason why. He made 17 combined saves in three wins this week, and came up huge in the city championship game against Lincoln.
With time running out and the Blue Devils nursing a 1-0 lead, a scramble broke out in front of the Saunders net, with Ponce making what coach Mike Denman described as “a point blank save in the final seconds.”
