Every Sunday for the rest of the season, I’ll be naming a Player of the Week based on suggestions from coaches and all of you. Generally speaking, we’re looking for players who helped lead their team to success with key contributions from Monday-Sunday each week, so send me nominations on Saturday and Sunday morning. To make a suggestion, just send me a line or two on Twitter @vzmercogliano using #POTW.
This week’s #POTW earned the honors because of both lofty stats and a 3-0 week for his team. Lakeland midfielder Johnny Denis played a part in 11 of his team’s 15 goals in three wins over Ossining, Peekskill and Middletown, including eight goals. Even as a junior, he’s already proved to be one of the most prolific offensive forces in Section 1, and he has his team back on track after a tough loss to Arlington two weeks ago. The Hornets have high hopes this season, and Denis is one of the biggest reasons for the optimism.
NOTE TO COACHES: To submit nominations for Player of the Week, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org after your final game each week.
