As Pearl River took the field on Thursday for its senior day against Nyack and a chance for the League IV-B title, a slow start was not on the agenda.

But with Ethan Dowie scoring the team’s only first-half goal about 25 minutes in, coach Damon O’Keefe used halftime to remind them of that.

“I challenged the captains and the whole group to come out and play better,” O’Keefe said.

O’Keefe watched his Pirates return to the field with intensity and make a strong offensive push led by Brian Chiarello. Pearl River earned a 3-0 win and a share of the IV-B championship with Tappan Zee.

Chiarello had two goals and assisted on Dowie’s goal. In the second half, the Pirates (11-2-2) also pressured the ball more.

“We wanted everybody to pick it up,” O’Keefe said. “They did that and they played an outstanding second half.”

The team honored eight seniors, including Chiarello and goalie Pat Guerin.

“Brian really worked hard off the ball to get himself in the right position and his effort throughout the game was great,” O’Keefe said.

Guerin, who made 10 saves in recording his ninth shutout, also left O’Keefe pleased.

“We wanted a shutout and (Guerin) really came through for us,” O’Keefe said. “The guys appreciate the way he plays and so do I. He’s been great this whole season.”

O’Keefe added that Chris Coughlan and Manuel Arango, who assisted on Chiarello’s goals, were major factors in the team’s defensive success.
