Friday’s results: Eastchester hands Edgemont second loss in a row

Edgemont got in its own way during Friday’s contest against Eastchester — literally.

A long thrown-in from Eastchester junior John Wiley found the foot of classmate Nick Georgiou, who blasted a shot with about seven minutes remaining in the first half. The shot deflected off a Panthers defender and past goalie Josh Newman for what turned out to be the difference in the host Eagles’ 1-0 win.

Eastchester coach Alfio Carrabotta said that the ball could have been saved had it not been deflected.

“(The deflection) definitely made it tougher,” he said before chuckling. “Impossible, actually.”

With no dog in the fight for a league title, Eastchester spoiled Edgemont’s plans to run away with the crown. The Panthers (10-3) entered with just one league loss, while the Eagles (9-7) had already been mathematically eliminated from the race.

Junior goalie Joe Blasetti made 11 saves in the shutout, including two key saves, which Carrabotta called “great opportunities” for the Panthers.

“That’s obviously a big ace for us,” he said, referring to having Blasetti for another year. “Hopefully he’ll take the bull by the horns and run with it.”

  1. Hi Vince, Why no mention of the fantastic (and totally unpredicted) win that Blind Brook had over Byram Hills Friday evening at the Blind Brook Homecoming? Great game that Blind Brook won 2-1
