Irvington’s Ben Ovetsky scored the go-ahead goal about three minutes into the second half Sunday, and the Bulldogs defeated visiting Nanuet 2-0 in the first round of the Irvington tournament.
Matt Friedlander added an unassisted goal.
“A credit to Ben and Matt,” coach Patrick DiBenedetto said. “(Matt) was able to get by a couple of defenders before finishing.”
Irvington plays Rye Neck next Sunday at 3 p.m. in the championship game. Nanuet plays Ardsley next Sunday at 1 in the consolation game.
Brendan Molloy made three saves for the Bulldogs. DiBenedetto gave credit to his defense led by Elliot Plaut, Toby Schwed, Toby Clarke and Scott Eisland, but also to his keeper.
“Brendan Molloy didn’t have to make many saves, but obviously he’s the eyes and ears back there giving directions,” DiBenedetto said. “I’m pleased with the whole midfield and defense. They did a great job.”
Eddie Fanning made 14 saves for Nanuet.
Best of the rest: Rye Neck’s Takuno Nishimura, Cameron Shaw and Tsuyoshi Yushino scored in the 3-0 win over Ardsley in the first round of the Irvington tournament.
