Monday’s results: Hernandez leads PC to OT win over Keio

All game, Port Chester forced the ball up the middle and was denied the net on its home field Monday. That changed in overtime when Steven Hernandez scored a goal on an assist from Steven Carias to give the Rams a 3-2 win over Keio.

Hernandez had two goals and assisted Alejandro Coyt for their other goal.

For coach John Cafaldo, the overtime and second-half success came from actually executing what they went over in practice.

“At first, we weren’t applying what we were working on in practice, so we looked lost,” Cafaldo said. “We finally came alive at the end of the second half and took a late lead.”

The Rams and the Unicorns were both unable to score in the first half of the game, but they opened up the offenses in the second half. Kensuke Hirai and Shusuke Sato scored for Keio.

“They are fundamentally sound, so they are not just going to quit,” Cafaldo said. “It’s always a great game. We’ve seen them so much in the past few years that I just keep reminding my team to work.”

Although the 5-3-1 Rams came away with the win after a better second-half performance, Cafaldo is still waiting for more from the team.

“At moments, we looked good, but there are still times where we looked bad,” Cafaldo said. “In the last 25 minutes and overtime, we looked better because we picked our heads up and weren’t playing kickball. We are very glad to win, but the kids know they have to bring the level of play up and play a complete game.”
