Saturday’s results: Joe DiBerardino lifts Blind Brook to OT win

When Joe DiBerardino scored the winning goal, assisted by Brendon Luke, for Blind Brook in overtime to defeat Rye 1-0 Saturday, Trojans coach Jozef Pomoryn was glad to finally see his team connect.

After watching DiBerardino miss a shot in a similar situation at the end of regulation, the overtime execution left the entire Blind Brook squad elated.

“We had a couple of chances and couldn’t convert in regulation,” Pomoryn said. “The defender pressed him the first time, but the second time Luke’s pass put him in the perimeter of the goal.”

For Pomoryn, the OT win was one more step forward for the 4-3 Trojans.

“Every game this year is tough and we are grinding every game,” Pomoryn said. “This game was very hard fought by both teams.”

The team’s turnaround started with a 2-1 win over Port Chester on Tuesday. Pomoryn made a change in the team’s defense by putting Alexander Fishman at center fullback. Prior to the change, Fishman had not played a game due to a foot injury.

After strong play by Fishman Tuesday, Pomoryn decided to rely onhim in Saturday’s game, too.

“Alex is tall, strong and physical and he has good foot speed,” Pomoryn said. “ The change and shuffling around was good because he played well defensively again.”
