Thursday’s results: Danny Elia lifts Sleepy Hollow

Last season, it took Sleepy Hollow more than 10 games to score eight goals. This year, the Headless Horsemen have reached that number in three games, and have three wins to go with it.

Junior midfielder Danny Elia one-timed a pass from Noah Gould to give Sleepy Hollow a 3-2 overtime victory over previously undefeated Woodlands (2-1) on Thursday.

“He’s such a tough guy to cover because he covers a lot of ground,” Sleepy Hollow coach Brian Duschenchuk said of Elia.

After struggling to find the net all of last season, Duschenchuk says that the team now has a solid scoring core in place.

“We’ve found strikers,” Duschenchuk said. “They know how to finish. … Last year, being inside the 18 was hard. This year, every time we’re inside the 18, I know we’re going to get a scoring opportunity.”

Demetri Boumis scored two first-half goals for Sleepy Hollow. Prince Kermue and Samir Raghib scored for Woodlands, both assisted by Marquis Berry.

Despite a roster that contains five seniors and three freshmen — a high for Duschenchuk — the coach said that it’s tough to rank the Horsemen among some of the other Class A powerhouses.

“That’s tough, there are so many strong teams,” Duschenchuk said. “You look at coach (James) Palumbo over at Somers and coach (Matty) Allen at Byram Hills; those guys run programs that are machines.”

Best of the rest: Juan Giraldo and Nick Tunic each scored in Mamaroneck’s 2-0 win at home over Pelham. … Pat Guerin had four saves for Pearl River in a 3-0 win at Clarkstown North. … Kevin Collado had a goal and an assist for Rye Country Day in its 2-1 victory at King Low Heywood Thomas. … Robert Derocco had five saves at home for New Rochelle in a 4-2 win over Edgemont. … Chris Valente scored the lone goal in Clarkstown South’s 1-0 win at home over Albertus Magnus. … Nyack’s Mike Sullivan and Sam Cohen each scored in a 2-0 win at Ramapo. … Bronxville’s Sam Aherne had two goals and an assist in a 4-1 win at Riverside. … Eastchester’s Fava Luca had a goal and an assist in a 4-1 win at Lincoln. … North Rockland beat Tappan Zee at home 3-1. … Carmel won at Blind Brook 2-1. … Scarsdale pitched a shutout a Yonkers in a 3-0 win.

  1. Just a thought, why is it that most game summaries generally don’t include any recognition, or kudos, for goal keepers and defensive players, especially when there is a shutout recorded.
