Monday’s results: Teams’ justify rankings

With about three minutes remaining in regulation in the Valhalla-Rye game, the teams appeared to be headed for overtime.

Then Jose Robinson was tripped in the box and Vikings coach Sandro Prosperino chose to take advantage of Yuto Tobin’s fresh legs for a penalty kick.

“Tobin had just got back on the field, so we knew we had a great scoring opportunity,” Prosperino said.

Tobin buried the kick to give his team a 1-0 win in its first league game.

Alex Briganti had two saves for Valhalla in a game in which Prosperino said the Vikings benefited from a strong overall defensive effort.

“It’s not four guys in the back,” Prosperino said. “It’s 11 players who have bought into this defensive mentality of playing hard for 80 minutes.”

Johnny Emanuel had nine saves for Rye.

“The keeper made some outstanding saves, so it definitely looked like overtime was going to happen,” Prosperino said. “It was a game where Rye did everything right defensively. They are a tough and well-coached team.”

Valhalla will visit Rye Neck Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in the first round of the Bronxville tournament. Prosperino expects his top-ranked Class B team to apply the one-game-at-a-time theory.

“Today was a big game in a sense that the rankings came out,” Prosperino said. “It takes a special group of kids to get it out of their mind and focus on the task ahead. We can be ranked any number during the season. Our goal is to be number one at the end.”
