Saturday’s results: Banged up Yonkers beats Peekskill

Battling new and ongoing injuries, Yonkers pulled out a 2-1 win over Peekskill on Saturday thanks to Chris Cruz and Nabeel Qawasmi.

Qawasmi, who was playing through a pulled hamstring, scored the winning goal in the 65th minute on a pass from Cruz before leaving the game with an injury. Qawasmi assisted on Cruz’s goal in the first half.

Jean Sanchez scored the equalizer for the Red Devils in the 55th minute on an unassisted goal.

Cruz, playing with a swollen knee after getting cleated earlier this week, left the game with approximately 10 minutes remaining after colliding with a Peekskill player. Yonkers coach Janet Ryan said Cruz is not expected to miss any games.

“It was pretty scary,” Ryan said of the collision. “(Cruz) is too hard-headed not to play. He wanted to go back in, but there was no way I was letting him go in.”
