Valhalla captured its second consecutive Mount Pleasant Cup championship on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Briarcliff at home.
“It was really big. We’ve been looking forward to this season,” tournament MVP Yuto Tobin said. “I think we can get a lot better.”
Tobin, a junior midfielder, scored the only goal of the game with 15:26 remaining in the first half on an assist from George Kennedy.
“Yuto just kind of came down the middle,” Valhalla coach Sandro Prosperino said. “It was a 30 yard rocket upper 90, and he hit it perfectly. It was an unbelievable shot.”
The Vikings bring back seven starters from last year’s team, which reached the Class B semifinals, and their early season success establishes them as a section title contender.
Prosperino was pleased with the effort, but hopes to see his team cash in on more scoring chances. Valhalla outshot the Bears, 11-3.
“We’re leaving too many goals on the table,” he said. “We had some opportunities to make it more than 1-0.”
Westlake won the consolation final earlier in the day with a 2-0 win over Pleasantville. Carmine Cicchillo had a goal and an assist for the Wildcats.
Best of the rest: Bronxville’s Sam Aherne four goals in a 5-0 win at Tuckahoe. … Pearl River’s Chris Coughlan scored a hat trick in a 5-0 win at home over Nanuet. … North Rockland’s Mark Goodall scored the only goal in the Red Raiders’ 1-0 win at Warwick. … Fox Lane’s Isaac Sanabria had four goals and an assist in a 9-1 win at home over Gorton. … Mamaroneck’s Emmet Gaffney had a goal and two assists in a 4-0 win at Lakeland.
