Team preview: Westlake

There’s a pocket of small schools in central Westchester that have been on the upswing in recent seasons, and may very well produce a section championship sometime in the near future. The folks at Westlake are hoping that its their team that gets it done, but it will take some strides this year. The teams that compete in the Mount Pleasant Cup every year — Valhalla, Briarcliff, Pleasantville and Westlake — are all considered contenders in Class B entering the 2013 season, and their early season tournament should establish which of the four is the closest to breaking through. The Wildcats graduated a few important players, but also return several starters who coach Nick Romeo is hoping can lead them to the promised land.

Here are the responses that I received from Romeo:

curranWhat was your final record last season and where did you finish in the playoffs? We were 8-7-1 and lost at Edgemont in the first round of sectionals.

Who are your key returning players? Carmine Chiccillo, F., Sr.; Conor Glendon, D, Sr.; Pete Anastasiou, D, Sr.

Who are the key players that you lost to graduation? Mike Cerrato, Edgar Solis (playing at Oswego) and Leandro Curran (Keuka College; pictured to the right).

Are you anticipating losing any players to the U.S. Soccer Federation season? We have a family in our district that does not play HS soccer, only club. The older boy graduated already and now the younger does not play for us. They are both excellent players.

What do you consider to be your team’s strengths? This year’s strengths hope to be leadership. I have many returning starters that know what it takes to be successful. We are hoping they show the way for the younger players.

What are some areas of concern? Concerns will be staying healthy, among many other things.

Which formation do you anticipate using? We have been lining up in a 4-4-2 in the past, but we are open to change according to personnel. We will determine this in the preseason.

What is your goal for your team in 2013? Our goals for the season are to win the Mt. Pleasant Cup, compete for a league title and then compete for a sectional title.

Who is your biggest rival(s)? Our biggest rivals all compete in the annual Mt. Pleasant Cup Tournament. They are Briarcliff, Pleasantville and Valhalla. It is a great event held at Valhalla HS every year.
