After winning a Class AA state championship last season, there’s no way of sugarcoating what the expectations are around Arlington these days. The Admirals took New York by storm in the postseason to capture first boys soccer state title for a Section 1 team since Bronxville won in 2008. Now the question is, can they do it again? Coach Craig Sanborn isn’t looking that far ahead, but Arlington certainly seems to have a strong group of returners coming back. Replacing their top scorer and goalkeeper will be Sanborn’s top priorities this preseason, and if he can effectively do that, the Admirals should once again be one of the top teams in the state.
Here are Sanborn’s words:
What was your final record last season and where did you finish in the playoffs? Record: 22-1; NYS Class AA champions.
Who are your key returning players? David Verdis, Forward, Senior; Eric Eastman, MF, Senior; Chris Shea, MF, Senior; Kevin Hoff, Defender, Senior; Pat Mogan, Defender, Senior; Peter Garson, Forward, Senior.
Who are the key players that you lost to graduation? Jeff Greblick (University of Rochester); Collin Illiano (SUNY Plattsburgh); Ryan Miller (SUNY Plattsburgh); Alex Fazio (Fairfield).
Are you anticipating losing any players to the U.S. Soccer Federation season? No.
What do you consider to be your team’s strengths? Our area of strength will be on defense. Our core defenders are returning and have good amount of experience with last years success. We will have good size combined with some very technical players.
What are some areas of concern? Area of concern will be goalkeeping and can our lone senior returner play within himself. He will be challenged by a sophomore. We will have to wait and see how things play out! Will not be easy filling the nets of Alex Fazio.
Which formation do you anticipate using? Really not set on one formation but traditionally we go with a 4-4-2.
What is your goal for your team in 2012? This year’s team needs to find their own identity and not fall on last year’s success.
Who is your biggest rival(s)? As always, our biggest rival is John Jay-East Fishkill.
