After hours of madness, games back on

In a postseason filled with crazy days of uncertainty and frantic changes on the fly, today topped them all. I woke up this morning to no word about any postponements, and when I looked out the window, the roads seemed pretty clear. There were no school cancellations involving any teams in the finals, so I went about making my breakfast and preparing for the day. But around 11 a.m., rumors began to spread about games being pushed back once again. Finally, about two hours later, we were told that all finals except for Class C were postponed until Friday. Just as we began to change our coverage plans, all of a sudden Section 1 changed its mind. The finals for Classes A and B are back on for today at the same times and locations. What a mess.

The teams that were hurt the most by all of the flip-flopping were Solomon Schechter and Haldane, who were forced to scramble when they were told their game was being moved up from 4:30 p.m. to 3 and would now be played at Somers.

“I was home, and my AD called me and said, ‘Can you be here in 10 minutes?’ ” Haldane coach Ahmed Dwidar said. “I had to drag my kids out of class from school. My team needs time to warm up. How do you change a game like that? I don’t know what to say, but it’s time to play, so we’ll go play. But it’s absurd.”

I really can’t blame the coaches for being upset. Simply put, this was not handled well. It’s not clear why the decision was made to postpone two of the finals in the first place, and it makes even less sense that the decision was suddenly reversed with about two hours to go before game time.

With all of that said, we’ve adjusted our plans and we’ll be covering all three of today’s finals. My colleague Nancy Haggerty will be covering the Class C final, Mike Dougherty will be covering the Class B final, and I’ll take the Class A final. I’ll be heading to Brewster first to watch the Class B game, then shooting over to John Jay for the Class A game. Nancy will be sending me updates from the Class C game, so follow me on Twitter @vzmercogliano for live updates on each final.

Here is the official schedule for today:
